Too many whole notes: the audit

1. What the book actually renders

The v6 page draws real staves through ABCJS.renderAbc. Fifty-one figures. When you count how many bars are a single note held for the whole measure, one staff carries the weight of the problem.

The guitar staff in the very same book proves real transcription was done here. The bass and vocal were not brought to that bar.

2. The song does not play whole notes

Another chat already built the stem-grounded fix, the-alligator_CORRECTED.mid. Here is the same bass line, two ways.

One note, held a full bar, over and over. That is the "6" (six eighth-slots = the whole 3/4 measure).

WHAT THE STEM PLAYS

Plus a 114-note stem-fill track. Mostly sixteenths and eighths, average length ~1 beat. A picked, re-articulating pedal, not a held drone.

3. What happened (the other-chats trail)

  1. A crude skeleton MIDI, believeyoume-midi/the-alligator/the-alligator.mid, is all whole notes. Bass = 12 whole notes, vocals = 8 whole notes. It is a chord map, not a transcription.
  2. A corrected, stem-grounded MIDI came later with the real 280-note bass and busy vocals.
  3. The v6 book was engraved from the crude skeleton, not the corrected file. The guitar got real rhythm. The bass and vocal kept the placeholder whole notes.

4. The fix

This pass delivers the audit. The regeneration is queued as its own one-song-at-a-time job so nothing is claimed done that is not done.

Why the music looks fake

In music, a whole note means "hold this one sound for a long time." A real bass guitar in this song does not do that. It plucks a fast string of short notes, like a heartbeat that keeps tapping.

But the book drew the bass as one long held note in almost every bar. Eighty-three out of every hundred bars. That is like drawing a whole race as one still photo of a runner standing still.

We know the real bass is busy because there is already a fixed music file on the computer. It has 280 quick bass notes. The book only shows a few long ones.

So the sounds picked (the chords) are correct. The rhythm, the fast and slow of it, was copied from a rough sketch instead of the real song. The plan is to draw the bass and singing again from the real file, then check it with the rule that says the page has to match the actual playing.
