The hard truth at $400: Apple does not sell any new Mac under $799 anymore. The Mac mini base jumped from $599 to $799 in May 2026 (memory shortage from AI demand). At $400 the only honest path is used or open-box Apple Silicon M1, which is still a 3 to 4x speed jump over the 2017 iMac.

If you walked into Apple Plaza with $400: they sell nothing in that range. The cheapest new Apple device with a real macOS is the Mac mini M4 at $799. The cheapest device they sell at all (iPad 10th gen) is $349 but that is not a Mac, it cannot run Demucs, Ableton, or Claude Code.

4. The honest recommendation at $400

1) Call Best Buy Independence first at (816) 795-9162. If they have an open-box Mac mini M1 or M2 in your price range, drive over and grab it. Best mix of price, today-pickup, and warranty.
2) If Best Buy strikes out, open Facebook Marketplace and filter for Mac mini M1 within 25 miles. Target $300 to $400, ask for original box + receipt, test it on the seller's wifi before paying.
3) If you can wait 3-5 days, BackMarket "Excellent" Mac mini M1. Lower risk than Marketplace, real warranty, $320 to $400. Ships, does not walk out today.
What a $400 M1 gets you vs the 2017 iMac: roughly 3x CPU, 5x GPU, current macOS support through ~2028, no more 50% WindowServer choke, no more swap thrashing. Not the dream machine but a real escape from the beachball loop.
If you can stretch budget later: the $799 Mac mini M4 is the true 5-year buy. The $2,199 MacBook Pro M5 Pro is the 7-year buy. Both covered in previous version of this page.

5. Before plugging in any new Mac

Back up the 213 GB book corpus first. Per memory reference_disk_full_crisis_2026-06-21.md: the corpus at ~/Older Downloads HUGE/Need All/ has zero backup. Run ~/Projects/_outputs/disk-cleanup/offload_corpus.sh against an external SSD before migrating. Internal disk is 99% full, no room to error.
Plan a $40 1TB external SSD too. A used M1 mini with 256 GB SSD has less than a third of the iMac's data on board. Crucial X6 1TB at Best Buy ~$70. Add to the trip.
