The Hobbit in Standard, before the first list exists

The set is not out yet. The Hobbit (HOB) reaches MTG Arena on 2026-08-11 and paper on 2026-08-14, with prerelease 2026-08-07 to 2026-08-13. Checked against the harvested corpus today, 0 of 479 creator decks run a card new in HOB, and 0 of 186 new HOB cards carry an Arena id yet. Any page naming the best Hobbit deck right now would be making it up.

So this answers the two halves that can be answered from evidence: who is talking about it, with their own words, and where the cards can go, measured as which of your surviving archetypes can actually cast them.
63 decks are excluded from the slot map. Wizards banned 3 cards in Standard on 2026-08-10: Badgermole Cub, Stormchaser's Talent, Gran-Gran. A deck built on one of them is not an archetype to plan a Hobbit upgrade into, so the map below is built from the 196 surviving decks only. Source: the announcement ↗. They disagree about Desolation Of Smaug. PowrDragon lists it as risky and worth waiting on, d00mwake lists it among the best cards in the set. Two creators reading the same card in opposite directions is the most useful signal on this page today, and it is a reason to wait rather than a tiebreak.

Nobody has named an archetype yet

Checked, and the answer is no. Across 23 transcripts I searched for any HOB card named in the same sentence as a phrase of belonging, "goes in", "slots into", "great in your X deck". One hit, and it does not name an archetype: Strictly Better MtG on Riddles in the Dark, "if you want to see a card that does look good in competitive from The Hobbit, here's Riddles in the Dark". Nothing matched your Arstall archetype names at all.

The reason is the format of the coverage. These are card-by-card preview and set-review videos, so each card is judged on its own text, not placed in a deck. Both PowrDragon and d00mwake say the same thing out loud: there was no early access streamer event for this set, so the usual source of early deck data does not exist.

An earlier version of this page implied otherwise. It matched colour identity and called the result a slot map, which is a fact about mana and not a claim anybody made. That section is below, relabelled.

This is a mana check. It shows which HOB cards each surviving archetype could physically cast, nothing more. No creator said any of these cards belongs in any of these decks, and no game has been played with them. Use it to narrow what to read about, never as a recommendation. Method. The card list is Scryfall e:hob -is:reprint legal:standard, pulled 2026-08-11. The ban list is creator-winrate-db/standard_bans.json, read from the Wizards announcement rather than from Scryfall legality, which had propagated 1 of the 3 bans an hour after the post. Decks, colour identity and the Standard-format gate are imported from build_page.py, the same code the creator page runs, so the three pages cannot disagree about what a deck is or what colours it needs. Videos come from the RSS harvest plus a channel uploads-playlist pull; where the description was not fetched the row says so.

What this page will not tell you. It does not rank HOB cards, it does not predict a tier list, and it does not name a best deck. Those need games. Come back after 2026-08-11 and the creator harvest will have real lists.
