# The Phish Jam Library · what we have, what's analyzed, what's next

A map of every Phish jam we have on disk, sorted by how far it has come down the analysis pipeline. The goal is an ixi-style close reading for each one.

## The numbers (verified 2026-07-18)
- **32 jam folders on disk** across the two Phish Media directories (`phsih jams/` and `Phish jams/` on the T7 Shield), 1994 to 2025
- **17 with split stems**, all live on the stem player
- **17 finished ixi pages**, which is every stemmed jam
- **15 unstemmed**, of which **12 have usable source audio** and 3 have none (audited 2026-07-19)

## Status tiers
- **Finished (17)**: the whole 2025 West Coast run, Golden Age through Plasma, one published ixi close reading each.
- **The deep vault (15)**, audited 2026-07-19:
  - **12 have usable source audio.** Eleven of the 1994 to 2011 classics carry a clean `instrumental.mp3` (264 minutes total: Reba 12.8, Bowie 33.5, DwD suite 43.2, Ghost 97 24.8, Wolfman's 27.7, Ghost 98 19.2, Cities 14.6, AC/DC Bag 24.9, Stash 16.0, Piper 20.3, Waves 27.3 min), and No Men in No Man's Land carries a 15:16 `jam.mp3`.
  - **3 have no usable audio.** 1998-04-03 Nassau, 2003-02-28 Nassau Tweezer and 2010-06-26 Columbia hold only `final_v2.mp3`, which is the finished video soundtrack with narration mixed over the music. Separating that would transcribe the voiceover along with the band.
  - The earlier claim that all 15 had source audio was wrong and is corrected here.

## The two thin-stem jams, now read
Back on the Train and Plasma were held back earlier as stem sets too thin to read. Both now have pages, built from the lanes demucs actually produced, and each page states which players it could not read:

- **[Back on the Train 2025-04-18](https://drwu-htmls.vercel.app/phish-bott-jam-ixi)**: drums, bass and vocals only, so Trey and Page are unread. The finding is a disagreement. The full-mix detector called the stretch C minor pentatonic and the bass stem does not support it. Krumhansl over the bass alone reads F major 0.834 against C major 0.766, and A ranks in the bass histogram's top four in every section, which a C minor pentatonic scale does not contain.
- **[Plasma 2025-04-20](https://drwu-htmls.vercel.app/phish-plasma-jam-ixi)**: piano, other and vocals only, so Mike, Fishman and Trey are unread. F major at 0.916, the most confident correlation in the run. The move is a re-rooting, the same three pitch classes holding throughout while the top of the stack flips from C to F at 7:00. Page's switch from the synth lane to the piano lane is visible in the flux share.

## Production queue
1. **All 17 stemmed jams have a published ixi page**, each route verified live at HTTP 200. Nothing in the stemmed set is waiting.
2. **The deep vault, 12 workable jams.** Blocked on disk, twice over:
   - demucs **is** installed at `~/.venvs/demucs/bin/demucs`. The earlier "not installed" note was wrong. What actually happens is that torch never finishes importing, with the Data volume at 98% (27 GB free). `demucs --help` returned nothing in five minutes on 2026-07-19.
   - A 6-stem WAV split of those 264 minutes needs about **15.6 GB**, against **7.8 GB free** on the T7 Shield (100% full).
   - Free space first. Then split one jam per pass, smallest first (Reba, 12.8 min, about 0.8 GB of stems).

## Known defect logged this pass
The anatomy script at `Phish jams/2025-04-18-back-on-the-train/script.md` states that Back on the Train comes from *Undermind* and entered rotation in summer 2003. Both are wrong. The Phish debut was 6/30/99 and the song was released on *Farmhouse* in May 2000. Queued for correction. The ixi page makes no song-history claims, so it does not carry the error.
