Electrical Sensitivity

Watches stop. Streetlights pop off when the survivor walks under them. Computers crash. Hearing aids whine. The credit-card reader at the grocery store needs a second swipe. Atwater's database puts this at 73 percent of adult experiencers. It is one of the strangest aftereffects in the literature, and one of the most consistently reported.

What survivors report

The pattern

It begins within days or weeks of the experience. The survivor notices that their wristwatch dies, replaces it, and the new one dies inside a month. Lightbulbs blow out around them at rates that exceed the bulbs' rated lifetime. They wear out the same pair of earbuds three times in a year. The dashboard of their car flickers when they touch the wheel after a long emotional conversation.

The intensity varies with the survivor's internal state. Many describe it as worse when they are emotionally activated, calmer when they are calm. Some develop coping behaviors: taking the watch off before a difficult phone call, leaving the new phone with a partner for the first week, avoiding the self-checkout aisle.

My husband, who is an electrician, ran a meter on my hands. The specific equipment that fails

Atwater's longitudinal interviews surfaced a pattern in what tends to fail. Battery-powered watches and small consumer electronics top the list. Streetlights, especially older sodium-vapor ones, are second. Magnetic-stripe cards demagnetize. Hearing aids whine. Audio recorders pick up unexplained interference when the survivor speaks about the experience itself. Newer LED lighting and solid-state devices are less affected than the older analog and electromechanical systems were in the 1970s and 1980s data, but the pattern has not disappeared, it has migrated.

Why this might happen

The current explanations

Altered bioelectric field. The most-cited hypothesis is that the experience shifts the survivor's resting bioelectric output. The human body produces measurable electrical activity (heart, brain, skin, nerves), and the field around the body is small but real. Researchers in the late 1980s, including Janet Quinn and Dolores Krieger, measured elevated readings in some experiencer populations using sensitive meters, though the work was never picked up by mainstream physics. The objection is that the field strengths reported are still many orders of magnitude below what should affect a wristwatch.

Static electricity and skin chemistry. A subset of the failures are plausibly accounted for by chronic dehydration, altered sweat chemistry, or static buildup. This explains the demagnetized cards and some of the small-electronics failures. It does not explain streetlights.

Confirmation bias. The skeptical position. Everyone has watches and lightbulbs die. Survivors are paying attention. The objection is that some survivors and their families kept logs, and the failure rates do come out higher than the equipment's manufacturer-rated MTBF. The data is uneven, but it is not zero.

Unknown mechanism. The position Atwater, who has the largest dataset, takes in print. Something is happening. Current physics does not have a clean account of it. The data is too consistent across decades and continents to dismiss, and too quiet to easily measure.

What survivors do about it

Practical adjustments

Most long-term experiencers learn to live with it. They wear analog watches and accept replacements as a normal expense. They learn to take a breath before touching shared electronics in heightened states. They warn new partners. The first wave of self-help literature aimed at NDE survivors, including Atwater's 1988 book, treats the electrical sensitivity as something to manage rather than cure. It does not appear to fade.
