remember when this song was on the radio
I was in college I remember thinking wow
like what is happening I'd never heard a
Baseline like that in my life to this
day I haven't really like watched a

sure what technique he's using but I can

unusual and maybe it's difficult and
that's why it's
unusual yeah just like you you shovel
these quick notes but they're evenly
spaced within that space I don't know
you can already feel that it's an odd

drums yet but when the drums do come in
and the guitar comes in the drums have a
uh I think a flanger on them maybe
that's the wrong term maybe sometimes I
confuse flanger with the other one that
sounds like a
flanger phaser so was one of those that
filters through the
frequencies such a cool I love the first
time I heard that on drums was cashmir
by L Zeppelin and I was like what why
don't we just do that drums all the time
this is amazing and then the guitar is
picking I think a fourth or A fifth or
something above the ba the

think that's an interesting choice
because it feels sound but also a little
expectant it's not quite what I was
thinking they would harmonize with it's

they just I think they like the fourth
in their Melodies and their baselines
core progressions and the fourth in the
scale even though a fourth interval is a
consonant very consonant interval in the
scale context or in the chord the fourth
is kind of an in between sound it's not
dissonant but it's not stable so it
makes sense to me that they would like
lean towards something that leaves you a
little bit like question mark

that which is really Sinister sounding

it yeah and then he gets uh Harmony of
uh fourth above no it's a fifth

the guitar is playing above the Baseline
and also this may be obvious but I'm
just going to say it that it sounds very
clear to me and I think this is
typically the way they work anywhere
where they like compose music and then
they bring it to Maynard and he writes
Melodies over it but you can really hear
the evolution of the Baseline maybe
being the beginning of this song truly
and its creation and then um Maynard in
the guitar just take that line and make
Melodies out of it so this um I know the
pieces fit is just the Bas line but
without the ornamentation
the you know it's it's kind of just the
upper notes essentially and it makes it
a really kind of cool
compelling uh gelled sound and because
they're in parallel fifths um there's a
little bit of a Dorian moment here
and then they
got
communication and then the song to me
shifts down to a minor and hangs out
there the base also goes down there and
goes sorry it goes up here maybe it's
down
here and everything just moved it down
to a what's cool about this is that it's
it feels almost like that's where it
wanted to go all along I don't know how
not really sure but it's really
exciting

communication that note that reaches
over into the a the section that's um in
a creates this tension between the base
riff and that key Center and what
Maynard's singing
uh you may recognize this as a
ninth just the best right
communication so freaking beautiful and
then essentially the chorus of this song
is really him singing
communication and then all the
instrumentation playing that riff that's
really what the chorus is it's cool
because that's really unusual right
usually the chorus has like the hook of
the song and but it does the hook of
this song is the Baseline really that's
truly what it is which is cool I notice
how they arranged things so that the
base has the this riff um comes through
is the guitar plays it an otif
fire right

symbol because normally we hear it as

cello and then he can just get grit it
up you know he's singing he's not
screaming but there's a lot of that
Distortion in his voice so it's like got
a little little bit of a scream in there
I guess if you're curious by the way
about vocal Distortion the charismatic
voice sounds like she's doing this whole
project on vocal Distortion Like a
scientific project so it's pretty cool

a good choice for this sex of the song
which brings in a lot a lot of
tenderness right it just feels more like
a dance here um also the absence of
drums brings the everything down a lot
but this is very pretty I love
the uh bells that are I think Danny's
triggering he's got this one that's on
um e and then the flat six note
F there's so many harmonics on them I
don't know if they're low or
high and then he does this uh

incredible with this flat six
chord uh one of the things that flat six
chord will do in a minor key is like
Melody notes and power chords and stuff

the other thing that's really really
Exquisite about this is Maynard has

fourths that we heard earlier those
don't to me communicate vulnerability
they communicate strength because those
intervals are so strong they're so
consonant thirds are also consonant but

gushy they're the middle of a chord you

structure the fifths and fourths are the
skeletons so now it's just like
interesting analogies with you know what
thinking about the video and anyway but
