I was taking a break and I got a
recommendation for a Tori Amos
performance
and I just started watching her perform
live and became overcome with emotion
and started to have some thoughts that I
wanted to share with my community
because I know a lot of you are huge
Tory Amos fans. I heard her stuff on the
radio when I was really into like new
metal and grunge and for whatever reason
it just did not like resonate with me.
Um,
but I'm in a very different place of my
life now. And I was just watching her
and
realizing that her
it's like her body and her voice cannot
possibly contain all of her emotion.
Like like she has more inside of her
that can be physically expressed. and it
like changed how I hear her voice. I
don't know. I'm I'm I'm having I'm
having a Torah epiphany.
So, I knew that I knew I should record
this. Um, okay. So, here's what I was
watching. I was I was watching her um
there's this compilation of her
performing on David Letterman from 1992
to 2009. And I was on the the song, it
was Spark. I really I love uh Precious
Things, Cornflake Girl, and Spark. Those
are like my three favorite songs of hers
that I've heard so far. Really powerful
song. So, I really love this one.

I kind of want to break down this song
right now. This might be I think this is
my favorite one of hers is Precious
Things. But yeah, like this song I love
listening to it. Um I was just on a
plane ride and I was listening to the
song a lot and I was like so well
produced, so good. But watching her do
it live just takes it to a completely
new level. Umh,

Her drummers have been so good, which I

her, you know, she pronounces some of
these words a bit strangely or or just
differently near the end. You know, the
preious things. There's a lot of I think
you would call it a dip thong. I think
like like taking a vowel and like making
it into multiple vowels.
That's like one thing that she's doing,
but also just like it's almost like the
vowel is just not expressive enough.
Like you know, she she's like she has so
much more that needs to come out and
that vowel has to like bend and morph
to, you know, like it's I don't know if
I'm explaining myself properly, but
yeah, it's just there's so so much. So,
like aside from the fact that, you know,
I'm I'm I'm starting to catch on to her
as a vocalist and um I very much
appreciate her as a as a pianist. Um
she's,
you know, I don't know if you realize
like how amazing she is. Probably you
do. Um
I mean, having I haven't even figured
out like how to play her music yet, but
I can just tell that it's
I think it's harder than it looks. Like
her and the fact that she's playing it
so effortlessly. I've never heard her
make any errors. If she has, they were
not noticeable and handled with
professionalism. She's she it seems like
it's so effortless for her. Uh and then
she's singing like again with like a
thousand% of herself over that. The
rhythmic complexity of what she's
playing, I think, is what impresses me
more than anything. The interplay
between her her hands is is it's like
percussive. I mean, I understand, yes,
the piano is technically percussion, but
I I feel like she's really bringing that
part of the instrument out more than
anything. I know she uses the sustain
pedal, but she only uses it, I think,
very judiciously, whereas I'm like
like, let's just let it bleed. But
because it's a it's a great way to cover
up um inaccuracies.
She doesn't need to cover anything up.
She's so clean. But yeah, it's just
there's a lot of
Have you ever heard Okay, never mind. I
was about to go down some tangent about
Gamalon music and the cotkans. There's
this interlocking pattern. Anyway, uh,
okay. So, aside from all of that, the
production I think is perfect for this
song. It's so amazing. If you listen to
the recording, which we probably will
right now, there's just
lots of layers, lots of little touches
and things that you, you know, can go
under the radar, just be felt
subconsciously.
The drums are just phenomenal. Um, but
the song itself, just the writing, you
know, I've been listening to her lyrics
and, you know, I love how they're like
they're very they seem like they're very
much telling a story, but there is some
level of of abstractness
to them that I really like. I like that
it's not all laid out for me. I like
that I have to work to understand or
interpret what she's meaning, you know,
without knowing if that's what she
means. I have to pull on my pull from my
own life experiences, which is I think I
don't know. That's just the kind of
lyrics I like. But the song itself is
just
it's just beautiful.
I want to figure out this first piano
part.
