Zappa Program Scope

The whole program on one page, written because a handoff narrowed the project to a single song and the receiving chat inherited no outline. Every count below was read live from songsterr.com/api on 2026-09-06, never carried forward from an older page.

Why this page exists

The 2026-09-06 handoff named one lock, s35881 Watermelon In Easter Hay, and described two audio repairs on that one song. It carried none of the program around it. A chat reading only that document would not know about fifteen other songs holding a restore revision in a moderator queue, nine printed transcriptions sitting unapplied, or thirty-two published audit pages. This page is the outline that was missing.

0. The plan, corrected 2026-09-06

Phase 1 as stated is already complete, and re-uploading would cause harm

The instruction was to re-upload the ghost restores that had not gone back yet, rebuilding from the original files kept on disk. Checked song by song against the live API on 2026-09-06: all sixteen damaged tabs already carry a restore revision, and every one of them has its pre-sweep baseline on disk. Fifteen restores sit in the moderator queue and one has published. There is nothing left to send.

Sending a second restore on any of these would stack a duplicate revision behind one a moderator has yet to read. That is the failure already visible on Uncle Meat, where three restores queued at once and the third exists only to say which two should be dropped.

#PhaseWhat it doesUpload methodState
1Ghost restore Put back every stripped parenthesised notehead, measured against the pre-sweep baseline. Revision on the original tab, since it repairs damage done to that tab. uploaded, awaiting moderators
1bRejection watch Re-read moderation status. Rebuild from the on-disk baseline for any restore a moderator blocks. One replacement revision, never a stack. standing
2Rebuild to match transcriptions Correct each tab against the professional printed chart, bar by bar. Create and edit a copy of the current tab. Our corrected version becomes our own tab and the original author's stays untouched. 9 charts idle, 7 songs
3Audio-evidence repairs Add textures the chart and tab both omit, proven from isolated kit stems. Copy of the current tab, same as phase 2. 2 built on Watermelon

The upload rule that separates phase 1 from phase 2

A ghost restore is a repair to damage this account caused, so it belongs on the original tab as a revision. A transcription-matched rebuild is a different reading of the music, so it uses create and edit a copy of the current tab. That keeps another transcriber's work intact and puts our version beside it rather than over it. This is what the whole ghost debacle was caused by not doing.

0b. Phase 1 audit: baseline and restore, per song

Every damaged tab, its pre-sweep baseline file on this Mac, and the restore revision now carrying it. Zero gaps. Baselines live under ~/Projects/_outputs/songsterr-zappa-paren-fix/.

0c. What the moderators actually said

Two reports on this account, both on stripping revisions, none on a restore

Read from the revisions API on 2026-09-06. Exactly two revisions carry a moderator report, and both are the sweep's own deletions rather than any repair:

Both tabs kept every ghost flag because the block landed before publication. Across all 48 revisions this account has on Zappa tabs, no restore has drawn a report and none has been rejected. The pressure is real, and its measured source is the deletions rather than the repairs.

0d. Disk verification: the restores carry the notation, not just the wording

The revision description is self-reported and is not evidence

Brandon's correction, 2026-09-06: the submit box does not always get filled in, so a description claiming a restore proves nothing. The check that counts is the notation itself. Every .gp in the repair tree was re-counted on 2026-09-06, and the count walks Beat → Notes references rather than the file's Notes pool.

The counting trap that has already produced one wrong verdict

GPIF <Note> elements are shared definitions. Inca Roads holds 14 Note elements carrying <AntiAccent> and those 14 are referenced 174 times across beats. A grep of the raw XML returns 14 and reads as near-absence. That is how reference_inca_roads_baseline_gp_is_post_sweep came to declare a good pre-sweep baseline useless, and it was corrected on 2026-09-06. Never count a marking by grepping the pool.

Baseline is the author's pre-sweep file. After strip is our published export where one survives on disk. Restore file is the built repair. Removed is the damage the ledger claims.

What the notation shows

One limit worth stating

This census reads markings attached to a Note. A staccato dot attaches to a Beat in GPIF, so the Montana claim that 317 ghosts were re-written as staccato dots is outside what this count can see. The ghost side of that claim is confirmed and the dot side is not measured here.

0e. The coverage gate: sweep the account, never the ledger

A seventeenth affected song, found only by sweeping

Every earlier inventory was assembled from songs that already had a repair in flight, so a damaged tab with no repair was invisible to it. Sweeping all 328 tabs under Songsterr artistId 5912 for revisions authored by this account returned 19 songs and 45 revisions, and one of them had never been counted.

Authorship is not damage, and the sweep says so

Of 19 songs carrying our revisions, Zomby Woof s412162 holds 9 and none of them is a ghost strip beyond r8766102, which was superseded. A revision by this account proves nothing on its own. Each one was classified by censusing ghosts on its own drum staff against the revision that preceded it.

Six ghosts are missing from the public tab right now, all crash (fret 49) at bar 67 beats 4 to 9, and all six notes still exist so only the flag is absent. The velocity damage is larger than the ghost damage. Our strip changed 11 beat velocities, Kirill repaired 5, and the remaining 6 govern 784 of 807 effective beat slots, because the f at bar 1 slot 6 sets the running dynamic for the whole track. The author's percussion reads f throughout and the live tab reads mp.

The repair is built and verified, and the upload is held on a gate

Built onto the live r8815000 export so Kirill's work survives, with copy-on-write where it was needed: Note 225 is referenced at 31 placements across 26 bars and was cloned, and Beat 443 sits at two slots wanting different dynamics and was cloned. Independent re-read of the generated file shows 6 ghost false to true, 0 ghosts lost, 0 other note-signature changes anywhere, 0 changes on any other track, and 0 dynamic mismatches against the author across all 807 slots.

preflight_import.py refused on GRID notated 134.0s against a 141.0s record, 4.96% off. The unmodified live base fails that gate identically and the build is timing-neutral, so the fault is inherited rather than caused. Brandon authorised a documented grid exception on 2026-09-06, and the exception is stated in the revision text so a moderator sees the reasoning.

Submitted as r8932027, 2026-09-06 21:00, tracksCount 6, createdVia GP, on moderation. The grid discrepancy stays open as separate work.

A NAMEDROP regression caught during the upload

The first build used xml.etree.ElementTree, which does not preserve CDATA. The base GPIF carries 92 CDATA blocks and the six custom track names sit among them, so Songsterr's /data/convert read them as absent and fell back to Tenor Sax, Overdriven Guitar, Electric Bass (pick), Drums and Bag pipe. That is the exact failure every restore description in this campaign asks moderators to avoid. Blanket re-wrapping by tag is unsafe, since <Name> appears 220 times and only 18 are CDATA. The fix is to serialize with lxml under XMLParser(strip_cdata=False), which is on /usr/bin/python3 here and not on the default python3. The rebuild kept 92 of 92 blocks and convert returned all six names.

1. The program in one paragraph

Frank Zappa drum transcriptions on Songsterr are being repaired against professional printed charts and against isolated drum stems. The work has four surfaces. A notation sweep run on 2026-08-29 and 2026-08-30 damaged twenty community tabs and that damage is being undone one song at a time. Separately, each tab is being checked bar by bar against transcriptions by Ryan Brown, Daniel Bédard, Todd Bishop, Pete Sweeney and the Drumnet charts. Separately again, isolated kit stems are being used to find textures the tabs omit entirely. Underneath all three sits a coverage question, which songs have a drum reading of the album take at all.

2. Six workstreams

3. The ghost-note sweep and its damage

What happened, in three sentences

Songsterr draws a ghost note as a notehead inside round brackets, which is the correct rendering. A sweep read those brackets as a defect and submitted revisions removing them across twenty Frank Zappa tabs. Sixteen of those stripping revisions published and went live.

Root cause has three layers. A house rule from stems-to-guitar-pro-drums, written for generated output, was applied to published community transcriptions. GPIF spells a ghost as <AntiAccent>Normal</AntiAccent>, so a search for <Ghost> returned zero and that zero was read as absence. The preservation audit compared pitch, rhythm and position across 120,579 beat events, and articulation sat outside what it measured.

Lane breakdown matters, because a ghost on a snare is unambiguous and a ghost on a ride is a different question. Counted 2026-09-05 by fetching each tab's pre-sweep revision.

4. The restore fleet, live status

DISPROVEN 2026-09-06: this section's original claim was wrong

This page first said every affected song carried a restore. An account-wide revision sweep across all 328 Zappa tabs then found Trouble Every Day (Live) s412170, damaged by our strip r8766285 and carrying no restore at all. The old 16-song ledger could not see it, because that ledger was built from the songs that already had a repair in flight. See section 0e.

For the sixteen songs the ledger did cover, every stripped flag has a restore built

Read live from api/meta/<songId>/revisions on 2026-09-06. 3,832 flags across 15 songs sit in restore revisions held on moderation, all submitted on 2026-09-05 between 17:22 and 19:43. The remaining 10 flags, on the Mothers Zomby Woof tab s5820647, already landed. Nothing in the damage ledger is unaccounted for.

Reconciled 2026-09-06. Adding Trouble Every Day (Live) s412170 and its r8932027 takes the board to 16 songs held on moderation and 1 public, across 17 affected songs. Uncle Meat holds three queued revisions on one song, so the count of held revisions runs higher than the count of held songs.

Uncle Meat carries a three-deep stack

s20690 holds r8907892, r8907952 and r8909627 all on moderation at once. The newest supersedes both earlier ones and says so in its description. A stack that deep is the one-upload rule breaking, and the repair is to stop uploading rather than to delete queued revisions.

Zomby Woof s412162 is closed

21 revisions, 9 authored here, none held and none blocked. The published revision is r8918601 by Nikita. This is the one song that carried three separate printed charts through to a cited revision.

5. Two tabs the moderators saved

Two stripping revisions were blocked before they could publish, so those tabs still carry every ghost flag they always had. No restore is needed on either.

A separate six revisions on Alien Orifice s68246 are blocked, all authored by Ben Dibden1 in late 2025 on guitar staves, unrelated to this program.

6. Tab against printed chart

Twelve charts on disk, three ever applied, and all three on one song

Ryan Brown, Daniel Bédard and the Drumnet chart were all used on Zomby Woof, cited by name in r8905411 and r8905491. Across every other song, a professional transcription has sat on disk and no revision has ever cited it. Nine charts covering seven songs are idle.

Six songs have a bar-level comparison finished: Zomby Woof, Andy, Drowning Witch, Keep It Greasey, The Central Scrutinizer and Watermelon In Easter Hay. Two concrete findings from that pass:

The chart archive lives at ~/Projects/_outputs/zappa-drum-sources/ with ARCHIVE-STATE.md as its manifest. Kasper Sloots supplies Zappa's own capital-letter section scheme with timestamps and bar ranges, which is a free bar map for any audit.

7. Coverage and redo ranking

Thirty-seven songs across Apostrophe ('), One Size Fits All and Joe's Garage were inventoried in album order from each record's MusicBrainz release. Eleven have an AI drum tab of the album take. Twenty-four have any drum tab of the album take. Five have an AI tab of a live take only, which never counts as coverage of the studio recording.

The blocker on the repair plan is source coverage

Across Over-Nite Sensation, One Size Fits All and Roxy & Elsewhere, 26 songs carry a drum tab and only 2 have a professional drum chart on disk. Eighteen have nothing. Any row claiming a mismatch on those songs would be invented, so they read as not yet measured.

Apostrophe (') ranks first for a redo. Five minutes fifty with no drum reading of the studio take. The studio tab s35873 carries zero drum tracks. The AI tab is a 1974 Los Angeles live performance of a different night. The only studio notation in the archive is Todd Bishop's two-system excerpt of the Jim Gordon break starting at 3:22.

8. Per-song audio forensics

Watermelon In Easter Hay s35881, furthest along

Repair 1, foot-pedal hi-hat, confirmed and built

The tab notates six Pedal Hi-Hat events across the whole song. The isolated hat stem carries a steady chick on the quarter. Periodic-subsequence test gives period 1.0800 s against the GP quarter of 1.0842 s at a snare-anchored 55.34 BPM. 178 of 505 grid slots carry a hat onset, 35% against a 26% chance baseline. Brandon's representative chicks at 181.93, 183.03, 184.10 and 185.19 s land in the stem at 181.92, 183.00, 184.09 and 185.17 s. Roughly 172 events are missing. Queue q-2026-09-06-ca2848.

Repair 2, snare rebound texture, confirmed

The tab carries 193 snare events with zero ghost flags. Brandon measured 202 principal snare attacks, 196 carrying at least one substantially quieter follow-up inside 250 ms and 178 carrying two, the first near 92 ms and the second near 156 ms. Use his counts. My own run over-detected principals at 411. Queue q-2026-09-06-8ce0a9.

The alignment anchor, settled

193 notated snare hits against 615 detected snare onsets gives offset 37.60 s, scale 1.012, effective 55.34 BPM, matching 90 of 193 within 80 ms. That is 47% against an 18% chance baseline, real at 2.6 times chance. Every audio measurement on this song uses that alignment.

Open, ship no deletion revision

The remaining 1,123 ride ghosts are unexplained. The cymbal-stem method gives no trustworthy verdict, since a 41% chance baseline swallows the signal at ghosts 47% and plain 55%. This needs an onset method with a lower chance baseline. Queue q-2026-09-06-1492ba.

Other songs with audio work on disk

9. Findings withdrawn, never cite again

Closed by measurement, do not reopen

The 193 post-snare ride ghosts on Watermelon are not misplaced snare rebounds. The tab places them at a rigid 271 ms after the snare, one GP sixteenth, with the 10th and 90th percentiles both at 271 ms. The audio rebounds land at 70 to 92 ms and 134 to 156 ms.

10. The song-id register

Titles collide in this catalogue, so the song id governs and the title never does. Two tabs are titled Zomby Woof and two are titled Montana. Verify with api/meta/<songId> before any edit.

11. The gate stack

One song at a time survives. One song per chat is retired.

The fourth amendment, written 2026-09-06, measured 77 of 164 open queue items sitting in the Zappa lane, 47% of the backlog, with four fresh chats promised for deferred songs and zero opened. A finished song now re-locks inside the same chat. The lock governs attention and carries no authority to stop.

  1. Precedence. The completion contract wins. The 24-hour or 400-turn ceiling wins next, as a handover naming the successor id. The single-song lock applies underneath both.
  2. The lock keys on the song id. Write it as one line and treat it as the only legal target. Fetch api/meta/<songId> and read title and artist back before editing.
  3. Branch three. When an outside holder blocks the upload, the chat keeps working evidence on that same song. The evidence list is finite and has five items, so the branch has a bottom.
  4. A queue item is never authorization to switch songs.
  5. The ceiling hands over. It never empties the queue and never converts open work into something that needs its own chat.

Measured drift that produced these rules: session c1e4ffee ran 113.2 hours with 3,208 assistant turns against 82 typed turns, a ratio of 39 to 1, and carried three song ids inside a chat allowed one.

12. Published pages

Thirty-two audit pages are live on GitHub Pages. Sources under ~/Projects/drwu-htmls/public/<route>/.

13. What the next chat does first

  1. Read this page before locking anything.
  2. Re-read moderation status live. Seventeen revisions were held on 2026-09-06 and a moderator decision changes the whole board. Precedent turnaround on r8769058 was about 58 hours.
  3. Lock one song id and write the lock line out loud.
  4. Send no second ghost restore. All sixteen are uploaded and one moderator decision changes the board.
  5. Ship Watermelon Repair 1, the foot-pedal hi-hat, against PRESWEEP-r7715683.gp, as a copy of the current tab. Verify by set difference that every pre-existing event survives and only pedal hi-hat is added.
  6. Do not ship a deletion revision against the 1,123 unexplained ride flags.
  7. When that song closes, re-lock the next Zappa id inside the same chat and announce it.
