Introduction to Occupational Therapy

When a state inspector arrives to renew Greendale's accreditation, the Save Greendale Committee has to prove the school employs its faculty in good faith, and Jeff has to teach a class he has never read in a room he has never sat in.

Premise

A credentials episode in which credentials are openly absent. The state asks for the one thing nobody in the room can produce in writing, and the episode is the day everyone spends pretending the room is producible. Compare S02E08 Cooperative Calligraphy, where the bottle was a single closed room and the truth was one missing object. Here the room is open, the missing object is everybody's qualification, and the bottle is what Abed names in the cold open. Jeff's classroom is a bottle because Jeff is teaching in it, the school is a bottle around the classroom, the season is a bottle around the school, and the inspector is a man trying to put a number on the bottle.

The Save Greendale Committee was invented to handle exactly this. The committee exists because Pierce is dead and Troy is on a boat and Jeff is on the wrong side of the lectern. It is also an audition episode in which nobody is allowed to audition. Three plots, three characters trying to prove competence in a discipline they did not study, to a man who will not look at them directly until the third act.

Tropes used

Abed-as-Greek-chorus naming the form, the genre-name doubling as a character tell about S5 attrition.
Dean costume escalation: morning-show producer at 9 AM (clipboard and headset that goes to nothing), tenure committee chair at noon (academic robes, a gavel, no committee), inspector-impersonator after lunch (polyester suit, fake name tag INSP. PELTHAM).
Save-Greendale-Committee-as-bottle: a meeting that fails to assign exhibits because Annie nests three substeps deeper than the room can follow.
Found-family-with-hard-borders: Magnitude attempts to be deputized, ejected on sight, says "pop pop" while being ejected.
The Winger speech in act three, openly fraudulent, lands because Hickey is in the room.
Britta gets corrected by Abed on a specific term ("occupational" vs "vocational") and corrects herself wrong.

Tropes subverted

The cool-mentor returns to reclaim the protagonist. The inspector is not a corporate antagonist (no Subway, no Honda, no City College). He is a tired man with a checklist who has been to forty-eight schools this year and has stopped reading. He approves Greendale by signing without looking. The form-experiment is that the antagonist is real and is also functionally absent.
The protagonist's competence is tested and proved. Jeff is not competent at Constitutional Law. He delivers a class that is openly bad. The class works anyway, because Hickey sits in the back row, not for evaluation, not for support, just because he had nowhere else to be, and the students take Hickey's presence as proof that the class is real. The mentor does not vouch. The mentor sits down.
Documentary framing reveals truth. No documentary. The cold open's held shot refuses the voice-over wrap-up from S05E01. The S5 form is over before it is named. The show no longer reaches for the documentary frame because the show is too short on members to be filmed.
The reformed villain proves he has changed. Chang is asked four separate times to do one specific thing he is no longer supposed to do. He does it the first time without being asked, three minutes into act one, in the wrong classroom. The reformation is a costume; the costume is wearing him.
The original study group reconstitutes for a crisis. The group does not reconstitute. The Save Greendale Committee handles it, a faculty-and-students hybrid that includes Hickey and excludes Magnitude. The crisis is solved by people who would not have been in the room two seasons ago. The found family did not expand. It inverted.

The three subplots

A-Plot. Jeff teaches Constitutional Law to nine students for the inspector. Jeff has not read the textbook. The textbook is a paperback Annie hands him on the way to the classroom; the spine cracks for the first time as he opens it. He delivers a class that consists of reading aloud from the table of contents, asking Annie to take questions, telling the class that the Constitution is "a kind of contract, and contracts are what I do," and realizing the inspector is not in the room. Hickey enters during minute four and sits in the back. The students relax. The class becomes real because Hickey is there. The inspector walks past the door without stopping. The classroom is graded approved by a man who never saw it.
B-Plot. Britta has been assigned to demonstrate "instructional competency in vocational counseling." Britta has half of a psychology degree and a bartending shift. The committee assigned her this because the form needs an occupational-therapy exhibit and Britta has used the word "occupational" four times this morning, none of them correctly. Abed offscreen-corrects her each time. Britta tries to counsel Hickey, who is the easiest target because he is sitting still and drawing. Hickey lets her counsel him, sincerely, for nine minutes, then says one sentence that re-counsels her, and she absorbs it by flattening it into her previous categories. The scene is Hickey's.
C-Plot. Hickey is drawing Jim the Duck across the whole episode and trying to mail Jim to a publisher Annie has not vetted. Hickey is the only character with an external goal that is not Greendale-shaped. He finishes Jim's bill in act two. The bill is round. The Pierce-shaped hole at the table is named here, not in the A-plot. Hickey takes a sip from a coffee cup that is not his, looks at the cup, says "this was Pierce's." It is not Pierce's cup. The cup is generic. The line is the show telling the audience that the table has a hole and the hole has a generic coffee cup in it.

The rhyme. All three subplots are about the same move. Somebody has been asked to perform a discipline they do not have credentials in, in a building that has stopped asking for credentials, in front of a man who will not look. The A-plot solves it by Hickey arriving. The B-plot solves it by Hickey saying one sentence. The C-plot solves it by Hickey finishing the bill. Hickey is in all three rooms because Hickey is the season's answer to the cold open's question: who is left at the table. The answer is the person nobody picked, and the person nobody picked is the person who can hold three plots open by sitting still.
