Kansas City Metro · MO + KS · Magic: The Gathering

My KC MTG Events finder vs.
the official Wizards Locator

Same metro, two ways to find a Magic night. One is a curated local roster of 20 KC-area shops. The other is the canonical WPN feed straight from Wizards. This page lines them up dimension by dimension, and shows where each one sees what the other misses.

The short version

They are not rivals. They cover different halves of the same city, so the honest answer is to keep both open.

Reach for mine when

KC MTG Events

  • You want every KC shop on one screen, no paging.
  • You care about a specific constructed format (Pauper, Pioneer, Modern), not just the event program.
  • You want casual and non-WPN rooms Wizards will never list.
  • You want to split by Missouri vs Kansas side, or export the night to your calendar as an .ics.
Reach for Wizards when

Wizards Store & Event Locator

  • You want the complete, real-time sanctioned roster, roughly 190 dated events inside 10 miles.
  • You need the entry price, player capacity, exact start time, and distance from you.
  • You want a map with pins and a 10 to 100 mile radius dial.
  • You want a store my scraper cannot see because it has no public feed.

The finding that matters

Verified live on 2026-07-14 against locator.wizards.com for Kansas City, MO.

Resolved the same day: the generator now reads this feed directly, so these three and the rest show on the page. The cards below are the gap as it stood before the fix. See "Update: shipped" at the bottom.

Three shops my page lists as empty are running Magic this week on the Wizards feed. My generator pulls events from store websites, a public Google Calendar, and a Facebook overlay. When a store sanctions through WPN but never posts a machine-readable schedule, my scraper comes up blank. The official locator shows a full week. This is the exact hole Wizards fills for me.

Head to head

The bold word marks the tool that wins that row. Counts are the KC search as it stood on 2026-07-14.

What only one of them can show you

The overlap is real, and so are the two edges that never overlap.

Only on my page

  • Casual and non-WPN rooms. Cardboard Corner Cafe, A to Z Comics, Brute Squad, Peculiar Games, Nirvana Coffee. Their Magic never enters the WPN feed.
  • A format hunt. Someone chasing a Pioneer or Pauper night can filter for it. Wizards sorts by program, so a plain FNM hides which format it runs.
  • The whole metro on one screen. Twenty storefronts, no paging, sorted results-first.
  • Calendar export and a clean MO / KS split.

Only on Wizards

  • Feed-less stores. Game Cafe, Action Sports, Pawn & Pint, the ones my scraper draws blank on.
  • The money and the seat. Entry price and player capacity per event, so you know a $35 draft from a free Commander night.
  • Distance and a map. Every event tagged with miles from you, pinned, radius adjustable to 100 miles.
  • The full sanctioned depth, roughly 190 dated events versus my 60.

Same night, two levels of detail

A single event as each tool renders it. Level One Game Shop, Friday 7/17.

So what do I do with this

Update: shipped 2026-07-14

The generator now reads this WPN locator feed directly, so the empty shelves are full and four new stores joined the roster. Each item below is in place.

  1. Done. build_kc_mtg_events.py decodes the locator's search.data turbo-stream feed in pure Python and treats it as the canonical source per store.
  2. Done. The blank stores fill: Game Cafe 26, Collector's Cache 7, A to Z 6, The Geekery 5. Level One went 4 to 22, Gators 3 to 20, Larry's 1 to 17.
  3. Done. Four stores the locator sees that the page never listed are now first-class: Action Sports, Pawn & Pint, Victory Road, Gamers Getaway. Pawn & Pint is re-classified as an active WPN room.
  4. Done. The header date binds to the generated window, and two sort buttons re-order every store by distance from Raytown or Wyandotte.

Result: 60 events across 15 stores became 210 events across 19 stores. Live: KC MTG Events.
