Kid mode 🧒

This is a jam, the part where the band stops the written song and makes music up live. The band picks one home note, F, and stays on it. Partway through, the bass player quietly slides the home note down to C while everyone else keeps playing the same colors. The floor moves and the music feels like it is leaning forward without ever fully landing. The grown-up breakdown is below, tap Grown-up mode to read it the normal way.

Golden Age 2025-04-18 jam peak — ixi analysis

An ixi-style read of the development window, 6:47 to 11:17, tracked player by player. Trey leads from the top, then Mike drops the bass from F to C and Page rushes in to fill the space, the two moves landing together. Fishman drives the build, and the jam rides out on a C pedal that never resolves home. Every claim traces to a per-stem chroma and spectral-flux pass across all six demucs lanes. The staves are transcribed off the guitar and bass stems with librosa pyin. Mike's bass tracks cleanly through the whole window and carries the harmonic story, F floor dropping to C, the C pedal, then back to F. Trey's guitar only resolved to clear pitch at the C-pedal peak, where the staff shows his high C against Mike's held C, so the other three sections show Mike's line alone.

Golden Age (jam peak, 6:47 to 11:17) — Phish · 2025-04-18 Climate Pledge Arena, Seattle

F floor · Trey out front (6:47 to 7:55) · the major-7th and flat-7th blur over a held F
Trey leads from the top, his guitar the busiest voice by far, circling A, C, F, the F major triad with the third on top, a B♭ brushing through as the flat seventh. Mike anchors the floor on F, busy and present, with an E natural and a chromatic F# in his field, the major seventh flickering against that flat seventh, the Mixolydian blur. Page is barely in the conversation yet, his piano the quietest it will be all window. Fishman holds a steady mid groove. The opening belongs to Trey over Mike's floor, the keys still waiting in the wings.
favorite momentThe B♭ and the E natural trading places over Mike's F, the flat 7th and the major 7th sharing one window while Page sits out and lets Trey carry it.
the pivot · Mike drops to C, Page enters (7:55 to 9:02) · the fifth becomes the floor
The signature ixi move, and it is a two-player handoff. Mike drops the bass root from F to C, the fifth becomes the temporary floor, and at that exact moment Page surges into the jam, his piano activity jumping fivefold as he fills the room the bass just opened. Page voices F, A, G, C over the new C pedal, the F-major color held above the dominant root. Trey stays out front on C, F, A. Mike moves the floor, Page answers by stepping in, the clearest call-and-response of the window.
favorite momentMike sliding the root down to C and Page rushing in on the same beat, the bass opening a hole and the piano filling it, one motion shared between two players.
the C pedal build · Page co-leads, Fishman drives (9:02 to 10:10) · the dominant held, energy climbing
The C pedal holds and the jam builds. Page is now a near-equal voice, his piano nearly matching Trey, the keys stating F, C, A, G against the held C. Trey adds G and an F# to his line, the scale filling in. Fishman drives hardest right here, the drums at their densest of the window, pushing the build. Mike keeps the C floor under all of it. What started as Trey alone has become a three-way climb, the dominant tension stretched while everyone leans in.
the ride-out · Mike back to F, Trey peaks (10:10 to 11:17) · no clean tonic return
Mike returns the bass to F, but no clean cadence lands. Trey peaks here, his activity at its highest of the entire window, driving C, F, B♭, G to the edge. Page stays strong on A, F, C, the keys still a full voice after entering at the pivot. Fishman rides the groove out. The B♭ keeps rubbing as the flat seventh and the fourth at once, the home chord glowing but never resolved, the resolution held off the table in the way ixi loves, all four players on it at the close.
favorite momentTrey hitting his busiest playing of the jam at the ride-out while Mike slips back to F, the peak arriving without a clean tonic to land on.
