Here's the full picture:

**What we have for Tame Impala drums:**

Only **Borderline** has been stem-separated. You have:
- Full drum stem: [`drums__03 Borderline-drums-C minor-98bpm-441hz.wav`](file:///Users/drwu/Music/STEMS_LIBRARY/Tame_Impala/Other/Borderline/drums__03%2003%20Borderline-drums-C%20minor-98bpm-441hz.wav) (the raw isolated drums)
- ~10 pre-sliced loop variations already in `TameImpala_Borderline/`

The other 11 Slow Rush songs are in [`~/Downloads/complete/complete/The Slow Rush/`](file:///Users/drwu/Downloads/complete/complete/The%20Slow%20Rush/) as full MP3s β€” **no stem separation yet**. To get song kits for all 12 tracks you'd need to run Demucs on the album first, then slice each drum stem into individual hits (kick, snare, hat, crash) using transient detection + spectral classification.

---

**Books you have locally that apply:**

| Book | Why it helps |
|------|-------------|
| [Gary Chaffee β€” Rhythm and Meter Patterns](file:///Users/drwu/Downloads/complete/complete/drums-books/Gary%20Chaffee%20-%20Rhythm%20and%20Meter%20Patterns.pdf) | Understanding the metric frameworks Kevin Parker plays inside β€” odd groupings, metric modulation |
| [David Garibaldi β€” The Funky Beat](file:///Users/drwu/Downloads/complete/complete/Drums/David%20Garibaldi%20-%20The%20Funky%20Beat.pdf) | Ghost notes, layered hi-hat textures β€” very relevant to Borderline's groove |
| [John Riley β€” Beyond Bop Drumming](file:///Users/drwu/Downloads/complete/complete/drums-books/John%20Riley%20-%20Beyond%20Bop%20Drumming.pdf) | Ride/brush patterning concepts that translate to Parker's textural layering |
| [Ted Reed β€” Syncopation](file:///Users/drwu/.claude/skills/midi-drum-analysis/source-texts/reed-syncopation.pdf) | The foundational reference for reading syncopated patterns in the samples |

---

**Skills we have:**

- **`midi-drum-analysis`** β€” our richest drum toolkit; maps hit categories, references Chaffee/Riley/Reed, produces MIDI grid analysis
- **`stem-analyzer`** β€” per-stem characteristic breakdown (attack, texture, frequency profile)
- **`drum-loop-grader`** β€” scores loop quality, pocket, and usability
- **`five-stem-song-analyst`** β€” full song breakdown including drums in context of other stems

---

**What would you like to do first?**

Option A: Run Demucs on all 12 Slow Rush tracks to get full drum stems, then build a hit-slicer script that exports per-song kits (kick/snare/hat/crash WAVs).

Option B: Start with Borderline's existing drum stem β€” write the hit-slicer now, get one kit immediately, then expand to the rest.

Option C: Run `midi-drum-analysis` on the Borderline loop files to understand Parker's patterns before slicing.

**Demucs is not installed** and neither is PyTorch β€” the existing stems were done through the Moises app (that's what `Moises_Input/` is). Two paths for step A:

- **Moises app** (same as Borderline): drag the 11 remaining MP3s in, wait for htdemucs_6s separation, done. No install needed.
- **Local Demucs**: `pip3 install demucs` β€” pulls in PyTorch, ~2GB download. Useful if you want batch automation.

---

**What to read before we start:**

For **C** (pattern analysis) β€” open these now, they're directly referenced by `midi-drum-analysis`:

1. **[Gary Chaffee β€” Rhythm and Meter Patterns](file:///Users/drwu/Downloads/complete/complete/drums-books/Gary%20Chaffee%20-%20Rhythm%20and%20Meter%20Patterns.pdf)** β€” Kevin Parker lives here. His metric displacement, phrase-length manipulation, and the way beats "slip" in Slow Rush are textbook Chaffee. Read the metric modulation and displacement chapters before the analysis so you have vocabulary for what you're seeing.

2. **[David Garibaldi β€” The Funky Beat](file:///Users/drwu/Downloads/complete/complete/Drums/David%20Garibaldi%20-%20The%20Funky%20Beat.pdf)** β€” Parker's hi-hat layering and ghost-note density is Garibaldi-influenced. Read the hi-hat comping section β€” it'll help you classify ambiguous ghost/ghost-adjacent hits when slicing in B.

For **B** (hit slicing) β€” less reading, more listening. But skim:

3. **[Ted Reed β€” Syncopation](file:///Users/drwu/.claude/skills/midi-drum-analysis/source-texts/reed-syncopation.pdf)** (already in the skill) β€” patterns pp.1–30 give you the grid reference for where Parker's hits land relative to the beat, which informs how to name and organize the kit samples.

---

**Ready to go?** Tell me:
- Moises app or install Demucs locally for step A?
- Once the stems are in, want me to write the full pipeline script (transient detection β†’ spectral classification β†’ kit folder export) for step B now so it's ready when A finishes?
You
pip3 install demucs but still with moises on files right? moises is superior sound?
Claude
Exactly right β€” Moises for all 12 songs, local Demucs only for automation scripting later if needed.

**Why Moises is better:**
- Their cloud runs `htdemucs_6s` on high-end GPUs with settings tuned for quality
- Local pip3 install runs on your CPU (no torch GPU on this machine) β€” same model, 5–10x slower and slightly more bleed artifacts without GPU acceleration
- The existing Borderline stem is clean precisely because it came from Moises

**So the actual plan:**

| Step | Tool | Why |
|------|------|-----|
| A β€” stem separation | Moises app, drag in 11 MP3s | Best separation quality, same pipeline as Borderline |
| C β€” pattern analysis | `midi-drum-analysis` skill on Borderline loops (already have them) | Can start this now |
| B β€” hit slicer script | `scipy` + `soundfile` + `pydub` (already installed) | No demucs needed for slicing |

**You don't need to install Demucs at all for this workflow.** Everything needed for B is already on your machine.

---

Start C now while Moises runs A in the background? The Borderline loops are ready β€” I can invoke `midi-drum-analysis` on the drum stem and existing loop files and produce a full rhythmic breakdown of Parker's pattern vocabulary before the other 11 stems arrive.

**Top findings from Borderline:**

1. **Zero swing (48.1%)** β€” the groove lives entirely in *pattern*, not timing feel. Parker is a producer, not a live drummer. No Keil-style participatory discrepancies at all.

2. **Velocity crushed to flatline** (stdev 2–7 across all hits, mean ~120) β€” the compressor does the dynamic work, not the MIDI. Ghost notes exist by *position*, not by volume.

3. **95 out of 97 bars are unique** β€” the hi-hat subdivision never repeats. This is Parker's signature: constant metric variation at the surface while the quarter-note pulse stays locked. Chaffee's displacement vocabulary is exactly the right framework.

4. **Kick is the variable, snare is the anchor** β€” inverted from standard rock grammar. The backbeat snare (with 2.6 ghost notes/bar surrounding it) is the stable element; the kick displaces freely.

5. **Bars 23–24 are the only repeated pattern** in 97 bars β€” the hit-slicer should use those as the "canon" loop for kit extraction.

The MIDI file is saved at [`borderline_drums.mid`](file:///Users/drwu/Music/STEMS_LIBRARY/Tame_Impala/Other/borderline_drums.mid) β€” load it into your DAW to see the pattern grid visually. Ready to start writing the B hit-slicer script whenever the Moises stems come in.

**What makes Eventually dramatically different from Borderline:**

| | Borderline | Eventually |
|---|---|---|
| Groove style | Pattern variation | Structural drama |
| Hi-hat feel | Mixed 8th/16th | Near-continuous 16th + 32nd micro-rolls |
| Dynamics | Crushed flat | Full range in use |
| Structure | Continuous | 3 full drum blackouts (incl. 8-bar silence) |
| Section changes | 0 | 32 |
| Album | Slow Rush (2020) | Currents (2015) |

The big story: **Parker got more compressed between 2015 and 2020.** Eventually has real velocity dynamics (stdev 22–32); Borderline has almost none (stdev 2–7). The hi-hat in Eventually also runs significantly denser β€” closer to trap-level 32nd-note micro-rolls inside a slow 78 BPM ballad.

**One flag:** the kick classifier undercounted (63 kicks, 0.6/bar) because "Eventually"'s kicks have a mid-punchy attack that reads above the 350 Hz spectral centroid threshold. When we build the step-B slicer, I'll raise the kick ceiling to ~600 Hz for Currents-era tracks. Drop any other Moises stem folders and we'll run the same pipeline β€” ready to queue them up.

Looked at all 10 samples. Here's the honest comparison.

---

**BuiltToFill reference kit β€” quality benchmarks:**

| Spec | BuiltToFill | What it means |
|------|-------------|---------------|
| Sample rate | **48 kHz** | Higher than CD; pro studio standard |
| Sample length | **1.5–5.25s** (long tails preserved) | Full natural decay captured |
| Articulations | 10 unique pieces | Kick, Snare, ClosedHat Γ—2, OpenHat, FootHat, CrossStick, Tom, FloorTom, Sticks |
| **Round-robin** | ClosedHat + ClosedHat2 | Two versions per piece to avoid machine-gun re-trigger |
| Headroom | Peaks 0.37–0.95 (varied) | Not slammed flat; dynamics preserved |
| Source | Close-mic'd individual drums | Clean isolation, multi-mic studio capture |

---

**Can we match it from Tame Impala stems? Yes for format. Partially for source.**

**What we CAN match 1:1:**
- 48 kHz output (upsample from 44.1 cleanly with scipy)
- Long natural decay slices (3–5 seconds)
- Multiple round-robin samples per piece (the Borderline stem has 1003 hat hits and 447 snare hits β€” we can pick 5–10 best examples of each, not just one)
- Headroom preservation β€” no normalization
- Proper naming, e.g. `TameImpala_Borderline_Kick_RR1.wav`

**What we CANNOT match (and why it doesn't matter for this use case):**

| BuiltToFill has | Stems have | Tradeoff |
|----|----|----|
| Clean close-mic isolation | Drum stem with full-band reverb/room | Stems carry the Tame Impala *aesthetic* β€” that's the point |
| Multi-mic capture (close + room + OH) | Single stereo mix | One perspective, but Parker's perspective |
| Multiple velocity layers per piece | Single dynamic range | We grab loud/med/soft hits from different bars to compensate |
| No bleed | Cymbal bleed when snare/kick hits | Inevitable in stem-separated material |

The key reframe: **you're not trying to match BuiltToFill's source quality β€” you're trying to match its *organization and craft* while keeping Tame Impala's *sonic fingerprint*.** A generic clean kick is the opposite of what you want; you want Parker's specific kick.

---

**Realistic target spec for our kits:**

```
3 round-robins per articulation Γ— 4 articulations = 12 samples per song kit. Across 12 Slow Rush tracks = ~144 samples total.
---
**Want me to write the slicer script now?** I'll target this format directly β€” 48kHz upsampled output, 3 round-robin candidates per kit piece selected by amplitude/cleanness scoring, separate ghost vs. backbeat snare extraction, BuiltToFill naming convention. Then we can run it on Borderline immediately and see how the output compares.
Built end-to-end and shipped:
---
**1. Slicer pipeline** β€” reusable for all 12 Slow Rush songs:
[drum_stem_to_kit.py](file:///Users/drwu/.claude/skills/midi-drum-analysis/tools/drum_stem_to_kit.py)
Auto-classifies hits via centroid percentiles (adapts per track), open/closed hat by sustain envelope, snare/ghost by RMS median. Round-robin selection by isolation score with 5s gap enforcement. Outputs 48kHz/24-bit PCM with preserved headroom.
**2. Borderline kit β€” 14 samples, BuiltToFill-spec:**
[TameImpala_Borderline_kit/](file:///Users/drwu/Music/Ableton/User%20Library/Samples/TameImpala_Borderline_kit)
| Pad | Articulation | RRs | Score range |
|-----|--------------|-----|-------------|
| C1  | Kick | 3 | 4.30–6.41 |
| D1  | Snare | 3 | 8.72–9.67 |
| E1  | SnareGhost | 2 | 3.05–3.62 |
| F#1 | ClosedHat | 3 | 4.72–61.74 |
| A#1 | OpenHat | 2 | 2.13–3.82 |
**3. Ableton Drum Rack β€” .adg preset (1.9 KB, gzipped XML):**
[TameImpala_Borderline.adg](file:///Users/drwu/Music/Ableton/User%20Library/Presets/Instruments/Drum%20Rack/TameImpala_Borderline.adg)
Drag onto any MIDI track. 5 pads at GM-mapped MIDI notes (36, 38, 40, 42, 46). Round-robins stacked via velocity splits within each pad. Generator script: [kit_to_drum_rack.py](file:///Users/drwu/.claude/skills/midi-drum-analysis/tools/kit_to_drum_rack.py)
**4. Memory rule saved:**
[feedback_automate_no_quality_compromise.md](file:///Users/drwu/.claude/projects/-Users-drwu/memory/feedback_automate_no_quality_compromise.md)
β€” Default to Python/CLI automation; output must match pro-tool quality benchmarks (48kHz/24-bit, EBU R128, etc.) or fall back to the pro tool.
---
**Try the .adg in Ableton.** If it loads cleanly, we can batch all 12 Slow Rush songs in ~20 min (Moises stems β†’ slicer β†’ 12 .adg files). If Ableton rejects the .adg (XML schema differences across Live versions), the manual drag fallback in the README is 90 seconds per kit.
---
**Quality flag β€” one usable issue:**
| Sample | Peak | Note |
|--------|------|------|
| **C1_Kick_RR1** | 0.041 | ⚠️ near-silent β€” unusable |
| C1_Kick_RR2 | 0.176 | quiet but audible |
| C1_Kick_RR3 | 0.971 | βœ… proper kick |
| D1_Snare_RR1 | **1.000** | ⚠️ clipped β€” already at ceiling in stem |
| D1_Snare_RR3 | **1.000** | ⚠️ clipped |
| Closed hats / Open hats | 0.74–0.92 | βœ… clean |
The slicer's isolation scoring picked the quietest, most-isolated kick as RR1 β€” which is wrong; we want a *loud + isolated* kick. The Borderline kit didn't show this because Borderline's compressor crushes everything to ~0.9 anyway (the velocity stdev = 2–7 finding from the analysis).
**Quick fix to the slicer scoring formula** (one-line change in `select_round_robin`):
```python
f["score"] = f["isolation"] * f["peak"] / (1.0 + peak_dist * 4)
# was:    f["score"] = f["isolation"]         / (1.0 + peak_dist * 4)
```
This penalizes near-silent picks while still preferring isolated ones. Want me to patch the slicer and rebuild Eventually's kit? Takes 30 seconds. Then we'd have a clean reusable pipeline for the rest of the catalog.
You
**One thing to flag:** 4 of the 5 kits have no separate `ClosedHat` pad β€” the 200ms sustain threshold classified all their hat hits as `OpenHat`. That's accurate for Appleseed Cast (ride-driven) but probably too aggressive for QueSeraSera. Easy fix: drop the sustain threshold from 200ms β†’ 120ms in the slicer. Want me to retune and rebuild, or leave as-is?
Done β€” Borderline.adg just popped out in Finder, highlighted.
Memory updated: from now on, files use `open -R` (reveal in Finder), folders use `open`. So clicking a .adg link won't auto-launch Ableton β€” it pops the file out for you to drag.
Sorry β€” I built the .adg from scratch with a minimal template and Ableton's parser is strict. Switching approach: clone the working template you already have and modify only the sample paths.
Rebuilt all 7 racks using your working "The Plague" .adg as the structural scaffold instead of from-scratch XML. The new files are ~20–24 KB each (vs. the broken 1.9 KB ones) because they contain all the Simpler/envelope/filter fields Ableton requires.
**Trade-off in v2:** one sample per pad (RR1 only) instead of velocity-split round-robin. The full kit folders still hold all 13 samples β€” you can drag RR2 and RR3 onto pads in Ableton manually if you want round-robin layers.
**Try Borderline now.** If it loads cleanly, the format is solid and I can build v3 with multi-sample-per-pad round-robin. If it still errors, paste the message and we'll patch.
The Plague was a sliced stem with warp markers β€” that's what broke the swap. Switching to "Tight and Ringy_classic" which uses real one-shot Simpler samples (factory pack, guaranteed to load).
All 7 rebuilt from "Tight and Ringy_classic" (factory Loop Loft pack β€” known-good structure). New file sizes are ~160–170 KB each (vs. broken 1.9 KB v1 / risky 24 KB Plague clone v2). The new files preserve the full factory Simpler/envelope/filter structure and only swap the sample paths + ReceivingNotes + Data alias blocks.
[TameImpala_Borderline.adg](file:///Users/drwu/Music/Ableton/User%20Library/Presets/Instruments/Drum%20Rack/TameImpala_Borderline.adg) is popped out β€” test that one first.
**All 7 rebuilt with the Brushes scaffold:**
| [QueSeraSera.adg](file:///Users/drwu/Music/Ableton/User%20Library/Presets/Instruments/Drum%20Rack/QueSeraSera.adg) | 4 | 162 KB |
**Key fixes applied:**
- Brushes template has real one-shot Simpler structure (not sliced/warped like Plague)
- ALL FileRef paths inside each pad are replaced (the Brushes pads have multi-velocity chains β€” every chain now points to the same sample, which is the right behavior for one-shot drums)
- `<Data />` alias blocks cleared (Ableton rebuilds them on first load)
- IsWarped forced false everywhere
Try Borderline. If it loads cleanly we have a stable pipeline; if not, paste the exact error and we'll keep narrowing.
| Snare centroid | 4147 Hz | 2780–3542 Hz (close, slightly darker) |
---
**Where we're SHORTER (we're truncating tails):**
| Articulation | WhiteKeys | Ours | Gap |
|--------------|-----------|------|-----|
| Kick | 2400 ms | **1500 ms** | -900 ms |
| Snare | 2400 ms | 2000 ms | -400 ms |
| ClosedHat | 2400 ms | **1000 ms** | -1400 ms |
| OpenHat | **6000 ms** | 2500 ms | **-3500 ms** |
WhiteKeys captures the full natural decay including room/reverb tail; ours cuts before the decay finishes.
---
**Where the SOUND IDENTITY differs:**
| Issue | Evidence | Cause |
|-------|----------|-------|
| Our kicks too bright | WhiteKeys kick centroid 1277 Hz; ours 4169–6368 Hz | Cymbal bleed in stem; our "kick" hits include adjacent hi-hat energy |
| Our OpenHat too dark | WhiteKeys 7372 Hz; ours 3339–3723 Hz | Kick/snare bleed during the open hat sustain |
This is the fundamental limit of stem-separated audio vs. close-mic'd studio captures β€” Demucs can't fully isolate one drum from another when they overlap in time. WhiteKeys was recorded with separate mics per drum; our stem is one mixed source.
---
**Two fixes that would close the gap:**
1. **Longer tails** β€” bump slice lengths to match WhiteKeys (kick 2.4s, snare 2.4s, closedhat 2.0s, openhat 5.0s). Trivial config change, zero quality cost.
2. **Spectral cleanup at slice time:**
   - Kick samples: lowpass at 250 Hz to remove cymbal bleed
   - OpenHat samples: highpass at 200 Hz to remove kick bleed
   - This is real DSP β€” it'll dampen the bleed but also slightly affect the original character
Want me to apply both fixes and rebuild Eventually's kit so you can A/B against WhiteKeys?
Now I see why everything broke. All your existing working racks are sliced drum stems (warp data + thousands of slice points), and the factory templates I used are from Ableton 9 which Live 11 rejects. There's no clean Live 11 one-shot drum rack template to clone.
Stopping the .adg autogeneration β€” it's the wrong path. Deleting the broken files and giving you the workflow that's 100% reliable.
Sample folders (these still work β€” drag-and-drop in Ableton):
/Users/drwu/Music/Ableton/User Library/Samples/AppleseedCast_IlluminationRitual_kit
/Users/drwu/Music/
Claude
Sample folders are still solid β€” the WAVs are 48kHz/24-bit, properly named, all in your User Library:
```
/Users/drwu/Music/Ableton/User Library/Samples/

```
**Foolproof load workflow in Ableton 11 (30 sec per kit):**
1. New MIDI track
2. From Ableton's left browser: **Categories β†’ Drums β†’ Drum Rack** β†’ drag onto the MIDI track
3. Find the kit folder in **Places β†’ User Library β†’ Samples β†’ TameImpala_Borderline_kit**
4. Drag the WAVs onto pads one at a time:
   - `C1_Kick_RR1.wav` β†’ C1 pad
   - `D1_Snare_RR1.wav` β†’ D1 pad
   - `E1_SnareGhost_RR1.wav` β†’ E1 pad
   - `F#1_ClosedHat_RR1.wav` β†’ F#1 pad
   - `A#1_OpenHat_RR1.wav` β†’ A#1 pad
5. **Save the rack** as `.adg` from inside Ableton (right-click the rack β†’ Save Preset)
That last step is the missing piece β€” **if you save ONE working rack and tell me the path**, I'll use *your* Live 11 rack as the template and the autogen will actually work for the other 6 kits. Want to do that?
Finder window is open. Eventually.adg is popped out β€” try that one first since it's the most-tested kit.
Memory updated so future sessions know:
- Live 11.3.30 user, use the `TameImpala_Borderline2.adg` template path
- `kit_to_drum_rack_v4.py` does the swap correctly
- Never use Live 9 factory packs as templates
If Eventually loads cleanly, the pattern is locked and we can batch any number of future kits without manual setup.
Confirmed β€” same Live 11 schema (5/11.3.30). But for our purposes [TameImpala_Borderline2.adg](file:///Users/drwu/Music/Ableton/User%20Library/Presets/Instruments/Drum%20Rack/TameImpala_Borderline2.adg) is the better template because:
| | TameImpala_Borderline2 | Young Jeezy Win |
|---|---|---|
| Pads | 6 (named: Kick, Snare, ClosedHat, OpenHat, etc.) | 37 (unnamed, chromatic) |
| Slice/warp data | 328 | 2782 |
| Size | 29 KB | 49 KB |
| Pad ID method | By name β†’ clean swap | By position β†’ fragile |
The Jeezy rack is a sliced-stem layout (37 chromatic pads of one big drum stem). Borderline2 is a proper drum kit with one sample per articulation β€” cleaner to clone from.
I'll stay on Borderline2 unless you'd rather I use Jeezy. But the key question first:
**Did the 6 new .adg files I just built actually load in Live this time?** Try [TameImpala_Eventually.adg](file:///Users/drwu/Music/Ableton/User%20Library/Presets/Instruments/Drum%20Rack/TameImpala_Eventually.adg) β€” if it loads cleanly with samples on the right pads, the pipeline is locked and we don't need Jeezy. If still broken, paste the error and we'll keep going.
You
they did
Claude
Locked. 🎯
The pipeline works end-to-end now:
1. **Slicer:** [drum_stem_to_kit.py](file:///Users/drwu/.claude/skills/midi-drum-analysis/tools/drum_stem_to_kit.py) β€” drum stem WAV/m4a β†’ 48kHz/24-bit kit folder with classified, RR-selected samples
2. **Drum Rack cloner:** [kit_to_drum_rack_v4.py](file:///Users/drwu/.claude/skills/midi-drum-analysis/tools/kit_to_drum_rack_v4.py) β€” kit folder + your `TameImpala_Borderline2.adg` template β†’ working Live 11 .adg
3. **Template (don't move/rename):** [TameImpala_Borderline2.adg](file:///Users/drwu/Music/Ableton/User%20Library/Presets/Instruments/Drum%20Rack/TameImpala_Borderline2.adg)
**Memory committed:**
- Live 11.3.30 schema (5/11.0_11300/Schema 7)
- Always clone from Borderline2.adg
- Never build .adg from scratch or use Live 9 factory packs
- `kit_to_drum_rack_v4.py` is the canonical generator
**7 working racks in [Drum Rack/](file:///Users/drwu/Music/Ableton/User%20Library/Presets/Instruments/Drum%20Rack):**
TameImpala_Borderline2 Β· TameImpala_Eventually Β· TameImpala_InstantDestiny Β· SufjanStevens_IbiDreams Β· AppleseedCast_ClearingLife Β· AppleseedCast_IlluminationRitual Β· QueSeraSera
**Next moves available (pick any):**
- **A** β€” Run the remaining Slow Rush Tame Impala songs through Moises β†’ autogen 10 more kits
- **B** β€” Apply the spectral cleanup (kick lowpass / openhat highpass) to close the WhiteKeys-quality gap
- **C** β€” Process more albums you've already separated (Beach House, Life and Times, Shiner, Failure, etc.)
- **D** β€” Build something on top of these kits β€” MIDI patterns? A mashup using the analyzed groove templates?
All 5 used the patched slicer: 2.4s kicks (lowpass 350Hz), 2.4s snares, 2.0s closed hats (highpass 200Hz), 5.0s open hats (highpass 200Hz) β€” matching BuiltToFill/WhiteKeys spec.
About "the other 2 Slow Rush tracks" β€” only Borderline and Instant Destiny have Moises stems in the collection. The remaining 10 Slow Rush songs (One More Year, Posthumous Forgiveness, Breathe Deeper, Tomorrow's Dust, On Track, Lost In Yesterday, Is It True, It Might Be Time, Glimmer, One More Hour) only exist as full MP3s in `/Users/drwu/Downloads/complete/complete/The Slow Rush/` β€” those need a Moises pass before I can kit them.
Found the bug. 4 kits have their **ClosedHat pad pointing to Borderline's sample** (because they lacked their own ClosedHat β€” the slicer classified everything as OpenHat β€” and my cloner left the template's original sample reference instead of removing the pad).
Also every rack has two pads ("Open Hat" + "OpenHat") with the same sample β€” useless duplication from the template.
Patching v4 to actually drop empty pads + dedupe.
Fixed. Every rack now points ONLY to its own kit folder β€” zero cross-kit sample leaks. The 4 racks without their own ClosedHat just don't have that pad now (drop instead of leaving Borderline's).
**Verified clean β€” all 11 racks point only to their own samples:**
| Rack | Pads | Pad layout |
The 5 kits that lost their ClosedHat β€” that's the slicer's open/closed classifier (200ms sustain threshold) being too aggressive. If you want them to have ClosedHats, I can re-slice those 5 kit folders (drum_stem_to_kit.py with the threshold dropped to 120ms), THEN regenerate just those 5 .adg files. Or leave them as 4-pad kits if you don't need the closed hat differentiation.
MIDI Mapping Problem
β€’ The pads are mapped too high, using MIDI numbers 83 through 92.
β€’ Standard drum grooves will miss these pads, because most drum MIDI expects kick, snare, and hats much lower.
β€’ Move kick to C1, snare to D1, ghost snare to E1, closed hat to F sharp 1, and open hat to A sharp 1.
β€’ That change makes the rack usable, especially with downloaded MIDI grooves and Ableton drum clips.
Hat Setup
β€’ The hats need choke behavior, because every pad sits in Choke Group 0.
β€’ Closed hat should cut open hat, especially for psych rock, indie pop, and Tame Impala style grooves.
β€’ Put both open hats and closed hat into one choke group, then play fast eighths and sixteenths to check feel.
β€’ The second open hat feels redundant, because one open hat comes from the main kit folder and one comes from Processed slash Crop.
Level Balance
β€’ Several files hit digital ceiling, especially the Borderline kick, open hat, ghost snare, and Instant Destiny snare.
β€’ Bring the hot samples down slightly, aiming around negative 3 dB peak per one-shot before rack effects.
β€’ The closed hat is much quieter, with peak around negative 6.5 dB and RMS around negative 31.6 dB.
β€’ Raise the closed hat gain carefully, because it needs to speak during grooves without poking through the whole kit.
Sample Quality
β€’ The Borderline snare has usable body, with enough midrange to work for a roomy indie backbeat.
β€’ The kick file has extra upper character, which can work for psych drums once the pad routing is fixed.
β€’ The open hat is long and washy, which fits the style, especially with choke behavior controlling overlap.
β€’ The ghost snare is too hot, because ghost hits usually need a softer level and shorter decay.
Project Folder Problem
β€’ The zip includes too much extra material, including old sets, backup sets, raw recordings, processed crop files, and several other kit folders.
β€’ For selling, make one buyer folder, with one Live Set, one rack preset, one Samples folder, and one short readme.
β€’ Move unused raw recordings out of the product folder, because long AIF files make the package feel messy.
β€’ The buyer should see only the finished kit, the required samples, and simple instructions.
Ableton Product Fix Order
β€’ First, swap kick and snare back, then save the rack again.
β€’ Second, remap pads to standard drum positions, then test with a normal MIDI drum clip.
β€’ Third, set hat choke groups, then play open and closed hats together.
β€’ Fourth, rebalance gain across pads, especially closed hat and ghost snare.
β€’ Fifth, create a fresh product folder, then Collect All and Save into that folder only.
Sellable Version Structure
β€’ Use this folder structure, because it looks professional and avoids buyer confusion.
A#1 Open Hat
Made for indie psych, washed drum loops, soft saturation, and Tame Impala style groove sketches.
```

Final Score
β€’ Concept score: 8 out of 10, because the reference lane is strong and useful.
β€’ Current technical score: 5.5 out of 10, because the kick and snare swap hurts the rack immediately.
β€’ Sellable after fixes score: 8 out of 10, because the core idea only needs routing, mapping, balance, and packaging discipline.
Claude
Executing the fix list in order. Starting with the MIDI mapping bug and choke groups.

**The .als is the one piece still missing.** Generating a Live Set file from scratch is the same parser fight as the .adg was. The clean way: open the .adg in Ableton, drop it on a fresh MIDI track, File β†’ Collect All and Save into the buyer folder. That writes a proper .als alongside the existing files. 90 seconds of manual work.

Once the .als is in there, the buyer folder is Etsy-ready.

All the lessons (Live 9 templates rejected, sliced-stem racks rejected, ReceivingNote = direct MIDI, hat choke groups, ship via Collect All and Save for the .als) are baked into `SKILL.md` and `reference/adg-format-notes.md`.
